Time flies when you're having fun because we're already in March 2018. But the car guy in me knows that when the month of March rolls around, I immediately say to myself "Giddy Up" because March means it’s time for the Geneva International Motor Show.
Over the last few years, I always have the welcomed problem of information overload due to all the new cars that get unveiled in Geneva. The show this year is in its 88th iteration and like many years before it’s guaranteed to impress all car aficionados. So, it’s time to sit down and start taking notes because I'm about to rattle off some of the cars that got my attention.
The first car from GIMS that got my attention was the RUF SCR. I know what you’re thinking that's a Porsche isn't it? That's a yes it looks like one, but no it's not a Porsche because it’s built from the ground up because RUF is an independent manufacturer. The RUF SCR looks like a 964 Porsche 911, and that’s where it stops in the physical form.
The SCR has some critical underpinnings, like a carbon tub fully encased in a carbon fibre body shell plus it has a tubular system that RUF call an integrated roll cage (IRC) with a push-rod suspension on both axles. The SCR comes with a 4 litre flat six-cylinder engine that puts out an impressive 510hp or 380kw. So, if you like Porsches but want something unique, then the RUF SCR is the car for you, that's if you have heaps of money because it's not cheap.
We've all heard of the late great Ayrton Senna, but back in December 2017, McLaren revealed to the world that they would be producing a car that would bear Arytons surname. That car is called the McLaren Senna. At the time McLaren said only 500 units of the ultimate drivers car is to be built. Then at GIMS McLaren said they're going one step further by creating a further 75 McLaren Senna GTR's on top of the original 500. McLaren has had great success in the past with the McLaren F1 GTR and the McLaren P1 GTR.
So, I'm sure the 75 GTR units will have been snapped up through expressions of interest once GIMS concludes on the 18th of March. McLaren are saying the Senna GTR will generate up to 1,000kg of downforce, and its 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 will produce an impressive 607kw, that's about 814hp in the old money. To me the Senna looks ballistic, so get ready for it to break lap records at a race track near you.
Then Toyota shows up with a car that hasn't been around for 16 years, the vehicle in question was the legendary Supra. At Geneva, Toyota made a commitment to Supra fans from around the world that they were bringing the Supra back. Toyota's public commitment was with the new GR Supra Racing Concept, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing created the concept. The Supra concept looks like it ready to race today, which is an excellent sign because Toyota has ambitions for the Supra to compete in international motorsport, i.e. Le Mans 24 Hours, Bathurst 12 hour and so forth.
Reports say the new Supra will have a straight six turbocharged engine and will be rear wheel drive. There wasn't anything noted at the show on performance figures for the new Supra, but will its straight six engine have adequate power? The racing concept does give you an idea on design cues for the road going Supra. So, my next question is for Supra fans, how long until we see the new Supra in a Fast and Furious movie????
