In early May, Porsche reached a huge milestone; they had just produced their one-millionth 911. While a massive achievement, it’s hardly surprising for the German manufacturer. No other car looks or feels like the 911, nor could any other car compete with it on the track in the 70s. It’s the car that still turns heads, and still gives competitors headaches. It’s a car like no other, and Porsche paid tribute to the 911 heritage with this millionth model.

The Car

Coated in Irish Green and trimmed with gold, this unique Carrera S finds the balance between its present-day persona and the company’s nod to the past. Internally, it houses a mahogany steering wheel, houndstooth seat trimming, as well as green backlighting and silver gauges to replicate the original 1963 model. Even the front exterior badge is designed to resemble the original crest. But this throwback 7-speed manual won’t be going to a lucky owner, with Porsche instead opting to display the milestone car in the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, after a press tour, of course. Travelling to Scotland, China, the United States as well as the Nürburgring, the landmark 911 will get plenty of miles before it goes on display.

The Comparison

So how does the millionth 911 compare to the very first 911? Under the hood, the 1963 model was powered by a 128hp, 2.0L flat-6 engine, putting out a top speed of 131mph with a 8.3sec 0-60. The 2017 model is capable of 191mph and can reach 0-60 in 4.3sec, thanks to the turbocharged 414hp, 3.0L twin turbo engine. As with any car breed, technology helped the 911 go from strength to strength, improving the chassis, steering, performance as well as comfort that made it appealing both on and off the track. And while the 911 has undergone many mechanical changes, cosmetically it has remained relatively unchanged. Apart from aerodynamic alterations and extra width to accommodate bigger engines, Porsche kept the exterior consistent throughout the decades. After all, why fix something that isn’t broke?

The Legend

When you look at the 911 as a machine, you can see why it’s lasted over 50 years. It combined the power of the track with the looks and feel of the daily drive, creating a dynasty that continues to this day. A flagship for Porsche, and one of the most recognisable cars in the automotive industry, the 911 doesn’t need to ask for respect, it’s had it for years. The millionth model is simply the next milestone that Porsche have reached, with the company no doubt already looking to bigger and better things. But for now, Porsche can sit back and bask in the glory of the millionth model of its one-in-a-million car.
